Hello, I’m Dr. Shannon, a native New Yorker (yes a true “New Yawker”) and please ignore everything you may have heard about us (because it’s not true, well maybe some of it). I started my nursing career in New York over 20 years ago. I have worked in various specialties such as labor and delivery, level 1 trauma center, pediatrics, home care, interventional radiology, and primary care. Through my experience in healthcare, I have noticed that mental illness has played a significant part in those dealing with health issues. It is then when I understood that it is difficult to get well physically if you are broken mentally.
I am certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Board-Certified Family Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. I received my Master’s degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner from St. Joseph’s College of Maine. While treating chronic diseases in primary care, it was evident that mental health services were also warranted, hence my return back to school. I went on to attain the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and shortly after obtained my post master’s as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. My education and clinical experience have afforded me the knowledge of creating individualized treatment plans for those with mental illness.
I diagnose and treat adolescents and adults with conditions such as anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, ADHD, mood, psychosis, and substance use disorders. Treatment may include medications and therapy as well as providing referrals for additional support if needed. As a nurse practitioner, I practice from a holistic model of care where I view the “whole person” not just the diagnosis. I focus on the integration of the patient’s physical and mental health with the expectation that the patient is an active participant in their treatment plan. Educating patients and having open communication about mental illness is equally important in helping remove the stigma. I provide evidenced-based treatment in a supportive, comfortable, respectful, and judgment-free environment with the ultimate goal of recovery and stability of symptoms. I look forward to being part of your recovery.
